At the foot of a tall tree, on an island now invaded by the flood, he saw Undine lying on the soft grass, smiling sweetly. Oh, how much more joyfully he used the fennel as a stick now than before! With a few leaps he broke through the rushing stream, and came up beside the girl on the bank, under the sheltering trees.
