"Undine"

At the foot of a tall tree, on an island now invaded by the flood, he saw Undine lying on the soft grass, smiling sweetly. Oh, how much more joyfully he used the fennel as a stick now than before! With a few leaps he broke through the rushing stream, and came up beside the girl on the bank, under the sheltering trees.

Julius Höppner illustrates 'Undine', (1884) by Friedrich de la Motte Fouqué.
