Basics of Candle Magick

Candle Magick is a form of magick that has a wide appeal because of it's potential for simplicity, while maintaining effectiveness, as well as the possibility of using it in a wide variety of subjects.

As a part of healing, candle magick can be used effectively, but as with all practices it is implied that proper ethics are implied - with that I mean, one always has to have the permission of the person, one does the healing for!

In order to better understand the concept of using candles in healing magick, it is important to be aware of some basics.

Candle color corresponds to the type of working, you will conduct, so does size and shape of the candle. Also, always use a new candle for each working - you can always recycle unused portions of a candle later - we will get to how to do that in another posting.

Associations of the colors of the candle are the following:

  • Red: Courage and health, sexual love and lust
  • Pink: Friendship, sweet love
  • Orange: Attraction and encouragement
  • Gold: Financial gain, business endeavors, solar connections
  • Yellow: Persuasion and protection
  • Green: Financial gain, abundance, fertility
  • Light Blue: Health, patience and understanding
  • Dark Blue: Depression and vulnerability
  • Purple: Ambition and power
  • Brown: Earth-related or animal-related workings
  • Black: Negativity and banishment
  • White: Purity and truth*
  • Silver: Reflection, intuition, lunar connections

White is most commonly used as a substitute for any candle color, you might not have available at the time.

Size of the candle also influences your spell work. Tea-light candles or small votives work best for spells and rituals that ask you to let the candle burn out, while pillar candles work the best for 7 day spells - or any other spell done over a longer period of time.

Candles in specific shapes can be used to utilize certain extra energies you might want to draw upon during your working - for example, if you work with the Goddess Bast, you might want to use a cat shaped candle, or if you are doing a healing for a female friend, a particular candle in the shape of a woman can assist you in focusing your energy toward that friend.

After you've selected a candle, you'll want to oil it or dress it before burning. This is a method by which you'll establish a psychic link between you and the candle itself. In other words, you're charging the candle with your own energy and personal vibrations, and projecting your intent into the wax before you burn it. To dress a candle, you'll need a natural oil -- many practitioners like grapeseed because it has no smell. High quality olive oil is a substitute, but with the obvious scent involved. Another option is to use special candle magic oils from one of the Wiccan supply stores. Begin at the top of the candle, and rub the oil downward to the middle. Then, begin at the base of the candle and rub the oil up towards the middle, ending where the first coating of oil left off. In some traditions of Wicca, the anointing is done just the opposite way -- start in the middle and work your way towards the two ends.

If your working calls for herbs to be used as well, roll the oiled candle in the powdered herbs until it is coated all the way around.

Basic 7 Day Candle Healing Spell:

Choose a light blue pillar candle, and make slightly visible marks on the candle, so that you have about 7 equal sections of candle (you will be burning one section of the candle each day).

Now dress the candle, as described above, thinking about the goal - seeing yourself or the person whom you are doing the spell for well, relaxed and at ease, while annointing the candle.

Place the candle in a sturdy candle holder (preferably metal, glass may shatter) and light the candle, letting it burn until the first part of the candle is finished.

Repeat lighting the candle for the next 6 days after, preferably at the same time of the day.

Variation: You can put the candle in front of a picture of the person whom you are doing the working for, or you can carve the name of the person into the candle before dressing it.
